Three new cement factories will start operating in Mozambique this year, increasing the total number of cement plants in the country to eight, according to a Mozambican newspaper.
The expected start of production at three more units was announced in Maputo by Armando Inroga, the Minister for Industry and Trade as he summarised activities carried out during the festive season.
The Minister did not give a date for the factories to start operating but noted that by the final quarter of last year the retail price of cement may be more competitive as a result of increased supply from imports and national production.
A 50 kilogramme bag of cement was sold at 300 meticals in 2010 in Maputo and Matola, but currently costs between 230 and 250 meticals.
Despite a drop in the price of cement, the cost of construction, specifically of housing, in the country has risen due to the price of other materials, notably of iron and/or steel.
